Welcome to the First Annual San Jose Classical Music Competition. Please read the Rules and check the syllabus before you register.
The San Jose Classical Music Competition is open to all amateur musicians and music students (please be 18 or under as of April 1, 2013). Competitors will be judged by 2-3 qualified adjudicators, and the winner(s) of each group will receive a signed certificate. All participants will also receive adjudicators' criticism of their performance in the form of comments from the judges. Other prizes may become available to competition winners (TBD) but are subject to availability and may be made available to participants at the discretion of the competition organizers.
We ask that all participants demonstrate good behavior, and show respect toward all other competitors, judges and staff at the event.
Registration is achieved through ticket purchase. To participate in the 2013 competition, registration must be completed by March 6th, 2013.
Participants may compete in more than one event, however we ask that participants limit enrollment to three (3) pieces per instrument, for a maximum of 6 total categories per competitor. For example, if a student plays two instruments, they are welcome to participate in 3 events on each instrument for a total of 6. The "Free Play" event is open to all performers, regardless of how many events they have already entered.
Please enter categories appropriate to the level of the performer. For example, if a student enters the Solo Bach competition and is capable of playing advanced music such as this, we ask that this performer not compete against beginners.
All tickets are non-refundable.
Entrants will not be allowed to perform unless they are playing the correct piece for their event. Maestras Music LLC will put our best effort into providing enough information about repertoire to allow participants to identify and obtain the correct sheet music for each event. Failure to obtain and perform the correct piece will result in disqualification. If you heard about this event through your local music store, they should be able to help you obtain the correct sheet music.
If you obtain sheet music through a source other than what we suggested (e.g. many of the pieces can be found in the Suzuki books, but can also be obtained elsewhere) please make an additional copy so that the adjudicators are able to account for any differences between performances that can be attributed to editions.
You are encouraged to rehearse and bring an accompanist with you. However, should you require an accompanist, please purchase an "Accompanist" ticket, and an experienced accompanist will be provided for you on the day of your competition. Please note, we will make every possible effort to give you an opportunity to rehearse with your accompanist before the event, but we DO NOT GUARANTEE you will have enough, or any rehearsal time before you compete -- this is all dependent on how many people require the services of our in-house accompanists. Arriving early for your competition will give you the best chance of having adequate opportunity to rehearse.
There will be one "Free Play" event. Repertoire for this category will not be determined by the event organizers -- entrants may choose to play any piece they want, providing total performance time does not exceed 5 minutes and no amplification is required. Amateur musicians of all ages (including players over the age of 18) are welcome to perform. The "Free Play" event will allow participants to receive written criticism on their performance from 2-3 adjudicators. We will endeavor to make this a non-competitive atmosphere. There will be no prizes or scores awarded in this event.
As soon as we know how many competitors we will have for each event we will post the official schedule. Please note, events will be held on April 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21 (an additional weekend may be offered as needed to accommodate a greater number of performaers than anticipated). Participants should only attend the competition on the day(s) they are to perform. There is not enough room to allow multiple spectators. The first event for each day will be at 9am. Participants are welcome to arrive as early as 8am to warm up and rehearse with their accompanist.

We will need volunteers (before and during the event) and adjudicators. Please contact SJClassicalCompetition@gmail.com if you are able to help with any of these. If you are a music teacher, please get in touch. We want to hear from anyone who might be qualified to adjudicate and is willing to help.
We also need fundraisers! We rely on donations to help pay for prizes, printing and to offset operating costs. To make a contribution, please purchase a "Donation" ticket by going to Eventbrite.com and adding a "Donation" ticket to your registration purchase (you choose the amount). All donations will be greatly appreciated. We are also seeking business / corporate sponsors to help us obtain scholarships and prizes for our competition winners. Each ticket represents a separate competitive event. Please check carefully to ensure you are registering for the correct event! The pieces are listed in order of difficulty, with the first pieces being (more-or-less) easier to play. The last piece in each instrument category will be the most difficult. We don't yet know the exact timing of each event, since we do not know how many people we are expecting to register. Please watch MaestrasMusic.com for more information.
